Teaching Grade 6 math can be intimidating knowing that there is a Provincial Achievement Test at the end of the course. Rote memorization of facts and algorithms may work in the short term for some students; however, by focusing on deep conceptual understanding of content, students will have an opportunity to explore the beauty of mathematics through rigorous activities. When students have a deep understanding of content, the PATs will reflect this.
During this session, teachers will actively participate in student centred activities that focus on developing deep understanding of curricular content, discuss and solve probing questions that access more than just surface understanding, play games that will provide opportunities to master known facts, and examine the structure of the PAT exam.
