Reading, Writing, Playing, Learning: Joyful Literacy in K-2
Presented by: Lori Jamison
Date(s):
Thursday, April 12, 2018 | 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Session Location:
Clearview Board Office 5031 50 St., Stettler, AB
About the Session:

Literacy instruction is often a juggling act, all about balance, timing and skill. But with careful planning, assessment and monitoring, we can keep all those plates spinning - without spinning out of control. We’ll address the stages of literacy development and how reading and writing are closely aligned at each stage. Part of the day will focus on reading instruction, with special emphasis on organizing and teaching small group guided reading. The afternoon session will examine the writing connection, with developmentally appropriate teaching ideas, as well as guided practice and independent application. You’ll leave with practical lesson ideas, such as:

  • A simple two-day cycle for managing the reading block
  • A guided reading lesson template that includes intentional teaching, repeated reading and “must-do” independent practice
  • How “bubble gum writing” supports both reading and writing development
  • “Sticky Dot Details” to get kids over the one-detail hurdle
  • Nonfiction writing minilessons, from Bossy Sentences to All-in-All Endings
