Struggling Readers: Why Band-aids Don't Stick and Worksheets Don't Work Gr 3-6
Presented by: Lori Jamison
Wednesday, April 11, 2018 | 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Session Location:
Clearview Board Office 5031 50 St., Stettler, AB
About the Session:

Are there any students in your class who can’t cope with grade-level reading materials? Do you have students who avoid reading or cause behaviour problems because the work is “too hard”? The good news is that it’s not too late to get many of these students back on track - even in middle years. This session will focus on what works for struggling readers in middle and upper grades - and some of it might surprise you! The day with Lori will be full of practical, research-based routines and lessons for those kids who just need that “extra scoop” of instruction.

The session will include:

  • The 20-20-20 system of organizing your reading program to build in time for small group instruction.
  • The overwhelming research on why struggling readers need to read more – and how we can get them to do it
  • Where phonics, fluency and fundamentals fit in beyond the primary grades
  • The “fantastic five” comprehension superpowers and how to teach them
  • How “Think-aloud/Think-along/Think-alone” routines help adolescent readers build confidence and competence
  • Why writing about reading is “the broccoli of literacy”
