Building Multiplicative Thinking in Grade 3-6
Presented by: Cathy Coers
Wednesday, January 17, 2018 | 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Session Location:
Central Alberta Regional Consortium 8 Page Avenue, Red Deer, AB
About the Session:

Students struggling in mathematical problem solving may be using inefficient counting strategies or less efficient additive strategies rather than multiplicative strategies. How do we support them in developing more effective strategies? During this session, we will explore:

  • a variety of multiplicative strategies
  • ways of using manipulatives to develop deeper understanding, and
  • strategies for moving from concrete to abstract representations

Please note:  The morning session will focus on single digit multiplication while the afternoon focuses on multi-digit multiplication.  Grade 3 teachers may want to attend only the morning session rather than all day.
