Virtual "On Conference" - "On Line, On Time, On Place"

Alternative Assessments Using Tech Gr 7-12 (Sandi Berg):

Are you trying to move away from traditional assessment in your classroom? Are you looking to utilize assessment pieces that give you a better grasp of students’ conceptual understanding? We will explore several ways to tweak your formative and summative assessments. Time will be provided to create your own questions. We will also explore a few bigger projects that could be used in place of, or in addition to, the traditional unit exam. The focus of this session will be Mathematics; however these practices can be adapted for all subjects.

Assistive Technology K-12 (Kelly Huck):

An Assistive Technology (AT) device is considered any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a student and remove barriers to performance. The focus is to show how to meet students’ individual needs and goals and needed support to reach these goals. This presentation will examine different types of AT and the steps teachers can take to successfully implement them. Ways to evaluate the effectiveness of AT support with students in the classroom will also be explored.

CORE Connections (CBE Team):

This presentation will provide an overview of CORE, the Collaborative Online Resource Environment. Students and teachers are in the early stages of being able to access, use, remix and share high quality digital learning resources within and across schools and school jurisdictions. This collaborative learning technology initiative is a partnership between the Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School District, Rocky View Schools, Golden Hills School Division and Canadian Rockies Public Schools, in partnership with Alberta Education. CORE will provide teachers and students across the five school boards with consistent and easy access to a common repository of digitally-based, high quality learning resources including books, articles, newspapers, audio, video, images, animations, websites, database records, educational games and works of art. Users have the ability to provide feedback through comments and ratings to support their fellow users. Furthermore, CORE will allow students and teachers to contribute, share and remix digital resources to this user community under a creative commons license. This initiative is intended as a prototype of what could be a key component of an inter-jurisdictional or provincial “learning network” that leverages the SuperNet and uses a common infrastructure that supports shared acquisition, availability, management, storage and on-line delivery of learning resources for any learner, anytime, anywhere that the user has internet access. CORE will improve accessibility and search-ability of resources, and will manage the sharing of licensed as well as user-created resources across all participating school districts. Through this partnership we intend to create a repository of shared resources that enhance and streamline the manner in which all students and teachers access and learn with digital learning resources. Our approach represents a new way in which school jurisdictions are collaborating to help enhance learning opportunities. We also anticipate some cost-savings in the licensing of the resources. Data collected from the project will help inform other jurisdictions and Alberta Education of the benefits of having broad-based, shared access to digital infrastructure and resources for learning as well as multi-jurisdictional partnerships.

Effective Integration of Tech in HS Math (David Martin):

With effective integration of technology, you can move away from textbooks and worksheets and look out the window for math questions. Technology focus will include: Geogebra, Prezi, iPads, RemindMe, Glogs, Blogs and more if time allows. What if the tool provided a safe environment for you to fail in, but encouraged and motivated you to keep trying? What if the tool was full of rich narrative driven content? What if the tool had characters that drew you in and inspired you to create, wonder, and play? What if we used video games in the classroom? Come to see practical examples of how video games can transform and inspire learning. Do you ever feel like your students are there, but not really listening? Use technology to increase student engagement. We will explore a variety of online tools you can use them to "hook" your students for inspired learning. all subject levels.

Serious Games: Engaging Students in Inquiry-Based Learning

with Aaron Ball

We have all seen the power of video games to capture the attention and imagination of children and adults alike. While there are many teachers who understand the power of video games to engage children, there are few who use them in the classroom to engage students in learning. Current research shows game designers have built rich environments which have great educational potential; motivation, flexibility, collaboration, interactivity, and authenticity. In all of these dimensions teachers can move beyond being consumers, they can be guides in student learning.

In this two part session you will examine the research and practical applications of video games as learning tools. You will search for, play, and examine online games to find their fit in the Alberta Curriculum. You will learn to evaluate games and build assessment pieces to help you incorporate video games as co 4pxntemporary tools in your 21st century classroom.
