The key feature of a webinar is its interactive elements - the ability to give, receive and discuss information, typically through slide show presentations, streaming video, VoIP, whiteboard and text chat.

It will benefit those teachers who are in a jurisdiction or location where readily accessible central supports are either limited or do not exist. It is also designed to assist those who have limited training or experience in responding to the needs of newly arriving students and families needing English as a Second Language support.

Teaching ELLs is more than "just good teaching". Teachers will explore practical strategies for explicit language instruction that can be embedded within the context of everyday learning experiences. Strategies for vocabulary, grammar, syntax and conventions will be explored. The use of anchor charts, graphic organizers and technology are effective teaching tools when working with ELLs. These tools can be used to demonstrate, practice and recycle the target language and forms. These strategies and tools will be demonstrated during the webinar. Participants will have the opportunity to practice some of the strategies during this interactive session.

By understand ing some basic language acquisition theory teachers can better select appropriate materials, resources, strategies and supports for the ELLs they teach. This interactive session will introduce teachers to basic language acquisition theory including Cummin's BICs and CALP, Krashen's Comprehensible Input, Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development, Roessingh's Vocabulary Thresholds and Oxford's Strategies. Participants will have the opportunity to connect the theory to their practice during the session.
